Principles of Biodesign

An introductory course on Mathematical Biomedelling from 1st year BSc. Biomedical Eng. at UPF
Courses taught: 2018-19, 2019-2020, 2020-21, 2021-22, 2022-23.

Summary of the syllabus: Principles of Biodesign (PBD) provides a general introduction to mathematical models in biology and bioengineering. The course is organized in a two-fold structure. First, the study of growth processes in biology, evolutionary dynamics & constraints and mathematical oncology. Secondly, collective systems such as Kauffman’s boolean networks, fundamentals of neurophysics, aging and reliability theory. The students will learn how biological processes are formalized and understood from first principles. The subject is organised in theory lectures, problem classes and seminars.

The syllabus is coordinated by Prof. Ricard Solé, and it is part of the first year mandatory syllabus of UPF's BSc. in Biomedical Engineering.
