The Rashevsky Club

Great modern and historical problems in science

The Rashevsky Club was co-founded by Lluís Hernandez and I. Its main objective is to create an in-depth study environment with focus on specific topics of Physics, Mathematics, Biology & Evolution. The club was named in honor of the mathematical biophysicist Nikolai Rashevsky.

The club activities consist on meetings where selected problems are discussed openly and in excruciating detail. Provocative unconventional ideas are very much welcome.

Topics in past sessions:

  1. The Potatoe Radius problem, the Apple & the Moon, and a Relative Trip Across the Universe. (JP & LH)
  2. Revisiting Phase Transition Physics through the lens of Maximum Entropy Methods. (Ll. Hernández)
  3. A presentation of the fundamental concepts behind Field Theory: why we need fields? (J. Piñero)
  4. N-faced dices, and trouble-landing coins. Playing with combinatorics and probability. (Ll. Hernández)
  5. Random matrices. Proof of Wigner's semicirlce law. From nuclear physics to ecosystems. (J. Piñero)

Future topics:

  • The quirks of Statistical Physics, from Maxwell's Construction to the Yang-Lee Theorems.
  • The Ising Model: a full account on the Hidden Complexity in the 'Simplest' Interacting System.
  • GR Revisited: a review on Penrose Diagrams and an account of the ER bridge.
  • Great Untaught Motifs of Physics: the Spin-Statistics Theorem, the Spin-2 graviton and the EPR paradox.
  • The Quantum Quest: from Blackbody Radiation to the Construction of the Schrödinger's Equation.
  • The Theory of Public Opinion. Social Dynamics and Seldon's Ultimate Dream.
  • The Peripheral Nervous System: Structure and Function. Fractals Revisited.

The club is aiming to grow in the near future and become formally instituted.
